First. I might have a chance in studying maths. Need to do better next year, though.

Need to investigate a summer research project.
1) Learn more algebra.
2) Find a pure fellow who does abstract algebra.
3) Find a project.
4) Get funding.

1 is the important one at the moment, need to talk to Anastasia about the elementary rings she's probing.

Any advice?

I approve of your choices! Do you want assistance/advice on any maths?

Are you looking to go into something like statistical biology or epidemiology? I think epidemiology is really interesting.

hee hee,. very few people do! ^^;

hmm... actually i'm just looking to be a teacher ^^; but i wanted a degree behind me first, and it seems to be the only thing i'm remotely good at. but yeah, i won't hesitate to ask you if i need a hand though, which is likely to be frequent >.

Hmm, what do most people think of your decisions, then?

Teacher is good! What sort of level do you want to teach at?

You aren't good at any arts?

I look forward to it!

that it's suicidal (the teaching bit as well) ^^;

that's how i feel! ^.^
i wanna be able to teach any age group - another reason for the degree :)

well... i... guess i am... but it's not good for my head, and i wouldn't succeed with a subject like that... at least maths is a pretty solid subject.

lol, thank you~

so, hang on, did you take a gap year then?
where are you studying?

Haha, I suspect you'll survive.

Aah, that is excellent! What do you make of your fellow students?

What do you mean by not good for your head?

I didn't take a gap year, no. I'm now a Second Year Mathematics student at Trinity College, Cambridge.

we can but hope ^.^

well.... i missed freshers... so i haven't really had a chance to talk to them yet... i suspect there will be a fair few 'geeks'... though i need to find the computing/electronics people to fix some stuff for me ^^;

umm... when my timetable isn't fixed, like it wouldn't be for a design subject, my head gets filled with irrelevant things and my whole life goes all 'blah'
maths puts me in a good solid format and i work so much better ^^; (i don't have to think about emotions with maths)

ahhh, ok ^.^ your entry confused me a little, but congratulations! Cambridge is a wonderful place, i know it pretty well. I'm at Leeds... and it's huge... and scary ^^;

Of course.

Mmm, I see. I've ended up mostly associating with applied mathematicians, though I'm Pure myself.

Ah, I see. So do you think you could do independent research?

Mmm-hmm. What scares you?

Come over for dinner on Sunday! Or the Sunday after that, or the Sunday after that...

*nods* well... i dunno, i might not even talk to people in my lectures much. i haven't had a tutorial or practical yet so...

well... i think so, because i'll be in 'maths gear' which is kind of my point. see, art foundation etc are extremely 'do everything in your own time' sorts of things, with deadlines spanning over months, whereas maths, you have deadlines every 2 weeks, and no reading weeks or anything, so i have to apply myself everyday. so yes, i hope so ^^;

the bigness of it ^^; i'm not used to large cities. i was from the country until i moved to Leicester.

lol, i may take you up on that sometime! it's a useful place to stop on the way to Stansted airport, and i have some very good friends there :)

Mmm-hmm. Tell me how you get on, then! It's generally a good idea to help people with their stuff, or at least receive help from others.

Mmm-hmm, I see. That sounds preferable.

I see. Is Leeds much bigger than Leicester?

Okay! Bring your friends. How's the 30th or the 7th?

i shall do ^.^
yeah, i think once we have practicals/tutorials and such i'll be asking many people for help... i often understand the maths, it's the explanations and words i don't get >.<

*nods*
lol, Leeds is HUGE, it's like... the size of Sheffield... Population: 443,247

heh ^^; afraid i have no idea about future dates atm... but if an opportunity comes up i'll net you know, ne?

Okay, I'll wait to stay informed! By the way, how'd you like to learn some arbitrary pure maths? If you aren't learning group theory or topology, I can teach you some.

Explanations and words?

Isn't Leicester a million or so? No, it isn't. The urban area was 441,213 in 2001 according to Wikipedia, which is just a little smaller.

Okay. I can usually make something with two hours' notice.

ano... maybe later ^^;
i'm not sure what my coarse involves yet really... but i know i have to do all the core modules and states and probability... that's what i do my practicals in i believe... :/

words like integer, factorial... etc (i know what they are, well, i know what an integer is at least... ^^;)and then there're long words and stuff used in explanations... and some of the notations confuse me. but once i see it in a working example i'm alright ^^; *never really got the hang of English*

o... well:
According to the 2001 UK census the Leeds Urban Area had a population of 457,247 while the metropolitan district, City of Leeds had a population of 747,939 and is one of England's core cities.
that's what wiki says about it, but it's defiantly a LOT bigger than Leicester... i couldn't walk across it in 40mins like you can Leicester ^^; (the city it's self i mean)

lol, i'll defiantly give you more notice than that, but it's good to know ^.^

Okay! I'm free this week, but can probably find time later too.

fact(x) = product from i = 1 to n of i. if x is +ve integer, fact(0) = 1.

Okay, that's fine.

I see. That is impressive.

Goodie.

Same question to you, I think!

Though I have an idea of who you are.

I'm Cong Chen, accomplished mathematical person, occasional cook of pies and other foods, and an aspiring algebraist. Used to go to LGS.
